Do I need an upgrade?

These are carried out to report on the condition of an electrical installation, just like when you have an MOT for your car. We will carry out a non-intrusive visual inspection of the property condition, meaning we will not take the property apart.

The next thing we will do is test the installation. As part of the testing process, we will unscrew switches, sockets, lights, outlets etc. to take readings and continue with our visual inspection.

Finally, we will begin typing up the certificate. This will outline any visual observations we have made and all test results collected.

Depending on the observations and test results collected, the installation is then deemed satisfactory or unsatisfactory. Recordings are graded as either C1, C2, C3 or FI.

C1 and C2 codes will cause an unsatisfactory EICR. In some situations, an FI grading will cause an unsatisfactory report, however, this is at the discretion of the electrician carrying out the report

Electrical installation certificate

There are two different certificates for new electrical installations, alterations or additions – Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) and Minor Works Certificate (MWC).

EIC and MWC certificates are issued to verify the safety of an electrical installation when it is put into service. These certificates are also valuable for electricians carrying out inspections in the future.

They will use these past certificates to gain an understanding of the installation and compare current test results to see potential ageing and deterioration. This knowledge will help determine the next test and inspection date.

In the event of a claim for injury or fire, these certificates will be used as evidence to prove the safety of the original installation.

EIC certificates are issued for new, additional and alterations to a circuit. New circuits or full rewires are classed as new installs. Additions are when we add to a circuit, for example an additional socket.

Alterations are when we make a small change to a circuit. Work carried out that does not include a new circuit or work in a special location (outside, bathroom
etc), then receives a Minor Works Certificate (MWC).

PAT Testing

PAT Testing stands for Portable Appliance Testing. This test measures the safety of an electrical appliance and is completed through both visual inspection and electrical testing. After a PAT Test is carried out, we issue a full report. This includes an inventory list that contains a name, location, appliance type, and description as well as a list of appliances that passed or failed.
