Top Electrical Problems in Cardiff Homes | Trusted Local Electrician

Cardiff is a city of contrasts – from period homes in Roath and Canton to new-build estates in Pontprennau and St Mellons. With its mix of architecture and demographics, homeowners across the city often face a range of electrical challenges that vary by area.

As local electricians serving Cardiff, we’ve seen the full spectrum – from outdated fuse boxes in Cathays to smart home upgrades in Lisvane. Here are the most common electrical issues we encounter throughout the city, along with recommendations on how to address them.

1. Overloaded Circuits in Student Lets

Cardiff’s thriving student population means that many properties – especially in Cathays and Roath – have been converted into HMOS (Houses in Multiple Occupation). These homes are often under pressure, with dozens of devices running simultaneously.

The fix:
A professional inspection can identify overloaded circuits and recommend safer, more balanced wiring, essential for landlord compliance.

2. Outdated Consumer Units in Victorian Homes

Terraced homes in older areas, such as Grangetown and Splott, often still have rewirable fuses or consumer units without RCD protection.

The fix:
Upgrading to a modern consumer unit with RCDS and RCBOS ensures your system meets the latest safety standards and is better protected against electrical faults.

3. Not Enough Sockets in Older Homes

Many Cardiff homes were built when people only needed one or two sockets per room. That’s no good for today’s tech-heavy households.

The fix:
Install additional sockets, including USB options, in bedrooms, lounges, and kitchens. It’s a simple upgrade that reduces reliance on unsafe extension leads.

4. EV Charger Installations for Modern Suburbs

We’re seeing an increase in demand for electric vehicle charging points in areas such as Pontprennau, Thornhill, and Llanishen.

The fix:
We supply and install fast, grant-eligible EV chargers, future-proofing your driveway or garage for electric motoring.

5. Garden Electrics for City Green Spaces

From barbecue lighting in back gardens to summerhouse electrics in Llandaff, outdoor power is in demand across the city.

The fix:
We install safe, IP-rated outdoor sockets and lighting solutions – all protected by RCDS and compliant with the latest wiring regulations.
